Actron Manufacturing Company is founded by John Moran in 1964. The company's first product is a spark plug cleaner. Actron is the first company to introduce automotive test products for the DIYer designed to work on the new High-Energy Ignition. Prior to this technical advancement, inaccuracy and poor product reliability plague the automotive retail industry. Actron’s products are the first to correctly provide data about a car’s engine and diagnose the area to repair. The novel product is a significant step in helping to improve a car’s fuel and engine efficiency for the automotive consumer. Actron’s current CEO, Thomas Slater, joins the company in 1976 and leads the product focus into the expanding automotive retail market. Through Slater’s efforts, the revolutionary products produced by Actron lead retail giant Sears to select Actron as the sole supplier of automotive diagnostic equipment. The agreement moves Actron into the spotlight as the largest manufacturer of automotive diagnostic equipment in the DIY market. In an effort to expand its business to professional technicians, Actron acquires the KAL Equip‘ product line in 1986. Actron licenses the rights to the Sunpro“ tachometer and gauge business from Sun Electric/Snap-On. Today’s Sunpro tachometers are descendants of the legendary Sun Tach products from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s known for their quality and dependability. In 1991, Actron introduces the first retail market code reader. Previously only available for professional technicians, the product gives automotive scanning access to the DIYer. The technically innovative product is the first step towards bringing affordable code readers to the market. Actron introduces the world’s first Scan Tool for the DIY market in 1996. The tool allows the DIYer to obtain trouble codes from the on-board computer, diagnose and fix problems and clear the check engine light. Actron moves into its current headquarters facility in Cleveland, Ohio equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
